Some places announce themselves loudly. Others slip into your memory quietly. Lucerne was the second kind. We didn’t plan or research heavily, but the moment we stepped outside the station and saw the lake, the mountains, and the ferris wheel turning slowly beside the water, it felt like we’d walked into a painting.
Leaving Bern: The Ease of Swiss Rail Travel
We left Bern early that morning, stepping into the station with no stress, no rush, and no complicated itinerary. That’s the thing about Switzerland: you don’t need to plan your train travel. You just show up, check the board, and go.
The train to Lucerne was direct, and first class was extremely comfortable as we glided through the countryside. The ride was calm as the fields and small towns passed by.
Switzerland makes day trips feel effortless. You wake up in one city, and an hour later you’re standing somewhere a completely different.
Arriving in Lucerne: A City That Opens Up Immediately
Lucerne station is enormous, a web of platforms sending trains in every direction across the country. Inside, it feels more like an airport terminal than a station. Cafés, bakeries, shops and lots of people. But the moment you step outside, everything changes.
The city opens up.
The lake appears instantly. Wide and calm. Mountains rise behind it and reflect off the water like a painted backdrop. Boats drift quietly past. The air feels clean and cool.
Lucerne doesn’t ease you in. It greets you with a view.
The Autumn Fair: A Ferris Wheel Beside the Water
We arrived during the Lozärner Määs, Lucerne’s annual autumn fair. That explained the huge ferris wheel set up right beside the lake.
The fair has been running for centuries, and it transforms the lakeside into a festival space every year. The ferris wheel added this unexpected bit of magic. Kids ran around with snacks, and the carnival sounds filled the air. It was the kind of moment you don’t plan for but instantly appreciate.
Crossing the Chapel Bridge: History You Can Touch
We wandered toward the old town and crossed the Chapel Bridge, the famous wooden bridge you’ve seen in photos. The timber feels worn and warm. The paintings overhead tell stories I couldn’t fully decipher and some looked burnt I presumed from the 1993 fire. The bridge bends slightly as it crosses the river, giving it character.
One of our friends mentioned that one of his relatives had painted one of the panels, so I spent longer than planned taking photos of every artwork on the bridge. I sent them all to him later. Whether he used them or not, I don’t know but it felt like the right thing to do.
There’s something special about standing on a bridge that has existed for centuries and knowing someone you know has a connection to it.
Lunch by the Water: The Irish Pub Moment
After the bridge, we spotted an Irish pub right on the water, Mr Pickwick Pub Luzern. Being of Irish descent, I can’t just walk past an Irish pub in a foreign country. It’s a rule.
So we stopped in for lunch, sitting right on the lake’s edge with the mountains in the background. The water was so still it looked like glass. It was one of those simple travel moments that sticks with you: good food, good company, and a view that doesn’t need any filters.
Walking the Lakefront: Quiet Beauty, Even While Sick
I was actually pretty sick that day. Flu or something in that category but I refused to admit it. I just kept going, stubbornly pretending I felt fine. Probably not my smartest decision, but I wasn’t about to waste a day in Switzerland.
After lunch, we walked along the lake for about an hour. Lucerne is stunning, the reflections on the water, the mountains rising behind the city, the boats drifting past it all feels peaceful.
We grabbed some drinks along the way and talked about maybe going up Mount Pilatus, but honestly, the walk itself was enough. Sometimes you don’t need a big plan. Sometimes just being somewhere beautiful is enough.
Lucerne is that kind of city.
Heading Back to Bern: The Perfect Ending
Eventually we made our way back to the station, stopping at our favourite supermarket, Coop to grab snacks for the train ride home. There’s something comforting about ending a day trip with a bag full of Swiss snacks and a quiet ride back to Bern.
We ate, relaxed, and watched the scenery roll by. By the time we arrived, the day felt complete.
It wasn’t a long visit, and we didn’t rush to tick off every attraction. But Lucerne didn’t need that. A few hours of walking, eating, and taking in the atmosphere was enough to make it memorable.
Lucerne is a city that doesn’t demand anything from you. It simply lets you enjoy it.

We briefly talked about heading up one of the nearby mountains, but having already been up Jungfraujoch, we ended up spending the afternoon wandering the lakefront instead. If you’ve got more time than we did, Lucerne is also the perfect base for some of Switzerland’s best mountain excursions:
- Mount Pilatus – The classic Lucerne mountain.
- Mount Rigi – Incredible lake and mountain views.
- Mount Titlis – Snow, glaciers, and high-alpine scenery.
- Stanserhorn – A quieter option with stunning views.
We never made it up any of them, but having those peaks watching over the city all day was part of what made Lucerne feel so special.
Closing Reflection
Lucerne wasn’t a major stop on our itinerary. It wasn’t a city we planned around or researched heavily. But it became one of those quiet, unexpected days that stays with you long after the trip ends.
A lake, a bridge, a ferris wheel, a pub, a walk, a train ride home.
Sometimes the best travel days are the ones you never planned for.
